“A man who began his career saving lives, and ended up destroying them”– Robert Stack on Rev. Tony Alamo
Finally, After watching this nut for about 18 years from the Unsolved Mysteries story, this is one blog I can truly Nip in the bud….Enter Tony Alamo.
In 1991, I watched a story that my sister had videotaped from the TV show Unsolved Mysteries with host the late Robert Stack. It was a story that was eerily too familiar with the Jonestown People’s Temple cult and the Branch Davidian Group. The man was Tony Alamo founder / Senior Pastor of the Holy Alamo Christian Church. At the time of the broadcast, Tony was wanted on charges tax evasion and child abuse since 1977. Tony had many talents, he was Senior Pastor, Country Western Singer, Clothing Designer, and Convicted Felon.
Bernie LaZar Hoffman – Aka Tony Alamo was born in 1934 to Jewish-Romainian parents, he and his family moved to Montana where he worked at a newspaper office.
In the 1960’s Alamo moved to Los Angeles, CA and pursued a career in music eventually becoming a rock singer and recording producer. He was married and divorced and married to his second wife Susan Lipowitz in 1966. It was also around this time that Tony changed his name to Tony Alamo and begin his ministries in Saugus, CA. James N. Griffin, Former member of the church says how he was a drug addict whose life was changed by the ministry of Tony & Susan Alamo. He eventually gave up his drug habits and turned his life around for the glory of God.

"We are the World...We are the children"
In the 1970’s Tony and Susan’s ministry followers and congregation increased and they enjoyed the life of prosperity and the financial wealth lavished upon them by the contributions made by members and tv viewers who were affiliated with their ministry. The Alamo expanded their ministry to include a satellite ministry compound and a nightclub in Alma, Arkansas, where Susie was born and raised. Bill Clinton visits the nightclub to see Dolly Parton perform and describes Tony Alamo as “Roy Orbison on speed.” Members who lived on the ministry compounds owned by the Alamo’s complained of the horrible living conditions which they were not accustomed to. When confronted about the situation Tony would tell the followers; “if you want to be where me and Susie are then you are going to have to pay the price like we did”. Punishments varied for those who disobeyed the Alamos. Penalties ranged from withholding food to beatings to being booted from the church. Those leaving the church were told they would die, go insane or turn into homosexuals.

"Yes, pray for Susie to be healed my followers, or you'll turn Gay or the Devil!"
In 1980 Susan Alamo was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer, She died on April 8, 1982 at the age of 56 at the City of Faith Hospital in Tulsa, OK. It was around this time that things got even stranger at the Arkansas compound. According to news reports at the time, Tony Alamo claimed publicly that she would be resurrected. Local radio stations made fun of the announcement, Elishah Franckiewicz a former member recalls. “They were playing, ‘Wake Up, Little Susie,’ over and over again.”
“As a child in that environment,” she said, “I believed 100 percent that she was going to rise from the dead.”
Week after week, she recalls attending prayer vigils, and even lying down and curling up next to Susan Alamo’s rotting corpse. “She smelled,” Franckiewicz said. “She was cold and really, really hard. She was dead.” It was six months later that Tony had a heart shaped crypt built for him and his wife to place her body as a resting place on the grounds compound.
After Susan’s death, Tony got more insane and starting taking his frustrations out upon members in the congregation, the majority was upon the little children. James N Griffin, former member explains a time when an 8-year old girl Carissa was diagnosed with having early stages of epilepsy, and she would have spasms issues. Tony said that she had the “Devil inside of her and that he needed to be be beaten out of her”. The started off with 10 swats until it got to over a hundred. And While he traveled, he maintained a tight grip on the ministries control. Any issues were settled remotely through the telephone by having his followers carryout any acts of discipline or order.
Tony would eventually lend his voice again to the country and western world by recording and doing duets. He also started and was very successful at his ”Tony Alamo” brand sequined denim jackets selling them for $5,000 each. He would make up to about $60 million dollars off of the business. He eventually turned the ministry into a sweatshop. Working his followers long periods and slaving under intolerable conditions. In 1985, one of the members when to the Department of Labor and filed a complaint against the ministry regarding the issue of no pay and lower than minimum wages. The Labor Department issued a judgment against the Tony and Susan Alamo Foundation.

- “I Pity Da Foo who don’t buy one of Tony Alamo’s denim jackets, cuz he be a man of God!”
When news spread of the way Alamo shamefully treated the workers, the jacket sales started to decline and people were no longer interested in buying the jackets. After this the IRS revoked the ministries tax-exempt status and followers started to leave. Griffin decided that he had enough of Tony’s hypocritical messages he says that “people were being used and manipulated”.
In 1989 two former members charged Tony with child abuse and he was wanted on the charges, becoming a fugitive. The following year the members were awarded 1.4 Million Dollars in civil damages. Because Tony refused to cooperate with the settlement, the compound was seized by US Marshals to satisfy the settlement. It was this time while Tony was in hiding that he threatened to kidnap a federal judge and brought before his Alamo court, and execute him.
On February 16, 1991, Tony Alamo had his wife’s body removed from the heart-shaped crypt. Tony took credit for the removal of the body. He was ordered in 1995 to return the body. The Chancery Court judge stipulated that if Alamo did not produce the body, he would be sent to the local jail upon his release from federal custody. She was entombed in Tulsa, OK in 1988.
Justice was finally served on Friday November 13, 2009 in a federal courtroom in Texarkana, TX. Tony Alamo was given the maximum sentence of 175 years in prison. U.S. District Judge Harry F. Barnes said Alamo used his status as father figure and pastor and threatened and threatened the girls with “the loss of their salvation.” ”Mr Alamo, one day you will face a higher and greater judge than me; may he have mercy on your soul.” Judge Barnes said. Before the sentencing Alamo gave a statement praising God and stating “I’m glad I’m me and not the deceived people in the world”.

Tony Alamo's Tract Passing Goons
Interesting fact: I remember when Tony Alamo’s tract-passing henchmen came on the yard of Southern University in 1997. Passing out his tract entitled God’s Two Witnesses, I never forgotten the story I saw on Unsolved Mysteries back in 1991, at the time I couldn’t remember the Pastor’s name but I remember this was the exact photo from the Unsolved Mysteries show. I glanced through the tract and noticed several false truths and blasphemous lies that were made by Tony and Susan Alamo here are some of the statements from the tract
- “Tony, God keeps telling me I’m not going to live, I’m going to die. I’m going to be gone for quite some time. After that time, God is going to raise me from the dead, and when He does, you and I will be the two witnesses of God mentioned in the eleventh chapter of the book of Revelation.” — Susan Alamo
- “The Old Testament prophet Daniel saw a vision of the two witnesses of God. He didn’t understand the vision. Then Daniel said, “O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? And He [God] said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.” The vision that Daniel saw was, “There stood other two [the two witnesses], the one on this side of the bank of the river [on this side of the Jordan, which is the earth], and the other on that side of the bank of the river [which is in Heaven].” The river Jordan symbolizes going from this life into Heaven for those who are redeemed. Susan is in Heaven, and I am left here on earth. She shall soon be raised from the dead, and join me that we may fulfill the “time, times, and an half” chapter eleven Revelation ministry.” — Tony Alamo
- “The tares which Satan has sown into the world are the false Christians with their false churches, who belong to Satan’s world system. Satan has sown these tares for the purpose of confusing the world as to what true Christianity is. You will see Satan’s system along with the tares, the false Christians with their false churches, hate us the more as time goes on. This only proves the more that we are the two witnesses of God, and that the world worships the world system which is the devil’s. This is another end time prophecy fulfilled. The plagues will soon be upon the earth. Another reason that Satan hates us so much is that God confirms through us that the Bible is absolutely true by sending His plagues, by raising Susan from the dead, by giving our ministry power for three and a half years for the purposes mentioned in the eleventh chapter of Revelation, and finally the Spirit of life from God will enter into us, and we will stand upon our feet after having lain dead in the street for three and a half days while the entire world watches us ascend into the kingdom of Heaven on television.” – Tony Alamo

Tony & Susan (Jenova) Alamo
What scares me about dangerous people like Tony Alamo is that these people still exists in the likes of people like Larry Stockstill and Benny Hinn and Kenneth Copeland. The things that they do to deceive manipulate, and use people. Con tactics they use to coerce people out of monies, investments, and properties. And force to work in miserable meager penniless places and locations. Shame on these people who live their lives lavishly and let their kids enjoy their spoils, while their members get turned away or BEATEN! My prayer is what Christ told those who were caught in the house of the cult “Come out from among them and be seperate.“

"We hope that you can join us in our powerful anointed service on Sunday and don't forget to bring yer checkbook!"
